Glass straws? Who knew? How awesome!!
Introducing Glass Dharma Glass straws. In a world turning green, (where plastic is on the outs thank goodness!) everyone seems to be making smarter choices on what they can do to help the environment.
Recycling is an action you must take right now and a vital one considering we are currently using our planet’s resources faster than they can be renewed. Today, tonight and tomorrow recycling is an ongoing awareness to improve our ability to sustain life on Earth. Your role in recycling can be as small or large as you want it to be. Most things can be recycled today, even with our present processing systems.
For some, it can be hard to imagine a world without plastic – especially plastic bags.
The cons of using plastic bags are so overwhelming I don’t think I can think of any pros. They are a huge pollution problem, their lightweight design allows them to blow away easily. The fact that they are free gives them no value so people don’t think about how they dispose of them. They are made from petroleum, which could be used for fuel or energy. They don’t biodegrade, instead they breakdown and are mistaken for food and are often eaten by both land and marine animals which is fatal. They are found everywhere and many animals become fatally entangled.
They are not biodegradable, so they will persist pretty much forever, wherever they end up. Landfills if we are lucky, but because of their widespread use and their ability to fly away in the wind, they can be a big part of the trash along roads and fields. If they get into the water, they look like food and end up clogging the stomachs of a variety of animals, most famously sea turtles looking for jellyfish.
The recycling of plastic bags, while preferable to other disposal methods, is not cost-effective. Plastic bags have only existed for 25 years yet the billions that have been produced since then have caused immeasurable damage to the environment and to wildlife.
David Leonhardt suddenly created GlassDharma: The original glass straw to lower the demand for plastic straws. According to Leonhardt (who did some research on the harmful effects of plastics and plastic straws in particular), “that as of March 2008, McDonald’s serves an average of 52 million meals PER DAY?!? How many of those served do you think were given a plastic straw?” “I hope it is becoming obvious just how big of a problem these pesky little plastic straws can be. Remember, this is just from McDonalds!! Get the picture??” stated Mr. Leonhardt who has been an avid lampworker (glassblower) for over 15 years.
“I started doing some work for a local glass shop in town and noticed that the owner had glass drinking straws for sale. I had never heard of these before and I am always intrigued by something made out of glass that I hadn’t thought of. I was struck by the unique elegance in such a simple item.
I immediately recognized that here was a partial solution to our “plastics problem”. Now, granted, there are a lot more plastics in our world than just drinking straws, but bear with me a minute and let me put things in perspective … As of March 2008, McDonald’s serves an average of 52 million meals PER DAY! (Per their website) How many of those served do you think were given a plastic straw? I hope it is becoming obvious just how big of a problem these pesky little plastic straws can be. Remember, this is just from McDonalds!! Get the picture??
So …
I created the GlassDharma line of glass drinking straws and this website to contribute one solution to the misuse of plastics in our society.
Everyone that has seen these straws are filled with delight. Not just because they promote health and are environmentally friendly, but that they do these things with elegance and style.
Plain and simple, here’s how and why they work:
